2004 Willow Dreams of Plum

Premier : Taipei Crown Theater, 2004 Taiwan Woman Theatre Festival

The director of this play used modern theatrical methods to reproduce classic segments of the Kunqu opera Peony Pavilion. The Seesaw Chair & Table set and a bicycle-powered circular revolving stage, designed by Shy Gong, helped to present a love story in which the male and female stars moved back and forth between dreamscapes and reality, and the worlds of humans and ghosts. The fluid pace of the play, alternately rapid and slow, echoed the actors' bodily motions and the play emotional ebb and flow. This added interpretation at a spatial dimension of this traditional Chinese opera's tempo-which belonged to the dimension of time-gave the stage design an intriguing visualization of the play's rhythm.
